Abstract

Heat exchange between two fluids, passed through alternate discoidal cells in a vertical stack; is enhanced by feeding the fluids co- or counter-current, through inlet nozzles where Reynolds No. is >2000; the inlets being tangential so that a free jet forms around the periphery of the cell, thus inducing turbulent circulation. The outlet from the cell which must have an area exceeding that of inlet, e.g. by 6-7 times; is also tangential, pref. parallel to inlet and on the same side, connections to alternate cells being on opposite sides. The cells, which may be round or polygonal e.g. square, should have diameter at least twice height, and are pref. thin, e.g. 1mm high.
