Abstract

1356512 Mixing apparatus; phase contact apparatus, reaction with heat exchange tube bundle STRATFORD ENG CORP 1 Aug 1972 [15 March 1972] 35813/72 Headings B1C B1F and B1X A mixer and alkylation reactor has a horizontal tubular shell 10 and circulating tube 13 therein each having cylindrical portions 10a, 13a of larger diameter and 10c, 13c of smaller diameter connected by frusto-conical portions 10b, 13c, the axes of the cylindrical portions being parallel and those of the frusto-conical portions intersecting them; and an impeller 17 in the circulating tube portion 13c. There may be a bundle 14 of heat exchange tubes, and/or the shell 10 and tube 13 may be jacketted; and flow straightening vanes 30-35. Materials are supplied to the eye of the impeller through inlets 21, 22 and product withdrawn at 23; there may also be a drain inlet 24. In operation the impeller is preferably rotated so that flow in the tube 13 is towards the impeller. As shown the frusto-conical portion 10b is arranged so that the shell has a continuous flat floor but it may be slightly angled, see Fig. 6 (not shown).
