Abstract

1,064,164. Reactors for continuous polymerization; continuous discharge mixers. MICHELIN & CIE. June 29, 1964 [June 28, 1963], No. 26884/64. Headings B1C and B1X. A reactor suitable for the continuous production of polymers, for example polyurethane, polystyrene, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, polyisopropylene comprises a vertical tubular reaction chamber, means for feeding reactants upwards through the chamber, and, within the chamber, a roller capable of planetary motion so that it and the wall of the reaction chamber wipe each other. There may be more than one wall-wiping roller, and a further roller may be mounted coaxially with the reaction chamber. In Fig. 1 the reactor chamber 10 having heat exchange jacket 11 contains coaxial roller 25 and symmetrically disposed rollers 26, 27, 28. Reagents enter at 16 and flow upwards past mixing motor 17 (which may be a toothed disc) via opening 22 into the reaction space. The polymer is removed by outlet conduit 44 having impellor 45. The rollers may be driven by the shaft 34, or the reaction chamber 10 may be rotated.
