Abstract

1,117,337. Apparatus for making peracetic acid. FMC CORPORATION. 1 Nov., 1965 [3 Nov., 1964], No. 30260/67. Heading B1X. [Also in Division F2] Apparatus which may be used for manufacturing peracetic acid solutions comprises coiled tubular reactor 10 immersed in container 12 of liquid 14, for example water, means for example pump 38 and surge dampeners 42 for introducing reactants into the reactor 10 at a steady pulse-free rate through a mixing means 34, and outlet 48 for withdrawal of product, the reactor 10 having I.D. of #" to 1" and a length (in feet) to I.D. (in inches) ratio of 300 to 3000:1, and being rupturable by a force of less than 10,000 psi of inside wall area of the tube. The reactor may be made of stainless steel (exemplified), nickel or aluminium of wall thickness up to 0.02", or plastics material such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride or polytetrafluoroethylene, and need not have a circular cross-section. Magnetic clutch 40 is disengaged at start-up and shut-down so that only catalyst feed from 20 can flow to the reactor. The temperature of liquid 14 is adjusted by water or steam introduced at 44.
