Abstract

1,204,688. Mixing apparatus; polymerisation apparatus. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 22 Dec., 1967 [23 Dec., 1966], No. 58302/67. Headings B1C and B1X. [Also in Division F4] A mixer, reactor and scraped surface heat exchanger has a cylindrical container 10 jacketed at 22, a coaxial cylindrical hollow-walled draught tube 28 through which also a heat exchange fluid may be passed, a rotatable scraper 38 for scraping the inner surface of the tube 28, and a separately rotatable scraper system 60, 62 for scraping the outside of the tube and the inside of the container. As shown there are four scraper systems 60, 62 dependent from the ends of two arms 54 rotated by a shaft 58, while the scraper 38 is supported by a double helical ribbon stirrer 36 rotated by a shaft 70 supported by a footstep bearing 86. In operation the stirrer 36 and scraper 38 are rotated at a speed 2 to 100 times greater than that of the systems 60, 62 and preferably at 25-250 r.p.m.; material is supplied and withdrawn continuously at 18, 20 and circulates round the ends of the tube 28. In another embodiment, see Fig. 3 (not shown) the arms 54 are rotated by a hollow shaft (104) through which passes the stirrer shaft (92). The apparatus is intended for use with viscouse liquids and reactants and especially for polymerization, soap and grease manufacture, and the bodying of natural oils.
