Abstract

1,269,936. Separation of volatile components from mixtures containing styrene polymers. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 29 April, 1969 [21 May, 1968], No. 24225/68. Heading B1B. [Also in Division C3] Volatile components are separated from a mixture containing styrene polymers by passing the mixture through pipe 18 and heater 19 into a heated vessel 1 which is maintained under reduced pressure by a pump (not shown) connected to pipe 22. As the mixture drops from heater 19 to the liquid pool in the bottom of vessel 1, volatile components are vaporized and flow via pipe 22 to a condenser. Some of the partially stripped polymer is recirculated to vessel 1 through pipe 10 by means of gear pump 11, steam or nitrogen being injected at inlet 14. The recirculated material enters vessel 1 through dihead 13, and drops in the form of long narrow streams to the pool in the bottom of the vessel. Stripped polymer is withdrawn from the system through pipe 16. Heater 19 is maintained at about 245‹C. by circulating hot oil through it. Vessel 1 and pipes 10 and 16 are provided with heating jackets.
