Abstract

1407889 Wells &c TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 7 June 1973 [30 June 1972] 21737/73 Heading E1F [Also in Division B1] A method for recovering oil from a subterranean formation comprises mixing at elevated temperature and pressure a heavy hydrocarbon and feed water, such as brine, containing dissolved solids to give a water-hydrocarbon phase substantially free of solids and a water phase, separating the two phases, reducing in pressure and heating the water-hydrocarbon phase to form a steam phase and liquid hydrocarbon phase, separating the steam phase from the liquid hydrocarbon phase, and injecting the steam into an injection well 36. The hydrocarbon, which is preferably eicosane, is initially heated in a heater 12 to a temperature at which it assumes a high affinity for water, the hot hydrocarbon being then fed into the lower portion of a column 16. Brine is sprayed into the top of the column by means of a sprayhead 20 and passes downwardly through the upwardly flowing hot hydrocarbon. The interaction of the two streams causes the solid-free homogeneous water-hydrocarbon phase to be formed, and this phase is withdrawn through line 26. The steam and hydrocarbon are separated in a separator 48 and the hydrocarbon is recirculated via a pump 51. Solids precipitated in the column 16 descend to a sludge chamber 30 and the concentrated mixture formed therein is fed through a heat exchanger 32c to preheat the incoming brine.
