Abstract

1,044,112. Wells, &c. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Jan. 18, 1965 [Jan. 20, 1964], No. 2160/65. Heading E1F. Oil is recovered from a formation 27 penetrated by an injection well 15 and a production well 16 by fracturing the formation between the wells to provide fluid flow communication between the wells injecting hot preheat fluid down the wells through the fracture 30 into the formation, and injecting oil-displacing fluid into the well 15 and producing oil from the well 16. After a period the direction of flow in the formation may be reversed. The displacing fluid is liquid or gas, either hot or cold, and is injected at a pressure to allow the fracture to close. During injection of preheat fluid the well may be thermally insulated from the formation or the adjacent formation may be cooled. Steam may form both the preheat and displacement fluids in the recovery of tar from tar sands the preheat fluid is the liquid fraction of hydrocarbons distilled from the tar, and the fracture may be held open prior to heating by means of an unheated light fraction of the tar hydrocarbon or other suitable solvent. The method is suitable for the recovery of oil from formations which tend to cave in when heated to the temperature at which the oil can flow
