Abstract

1296098 Multiple-effect distillation apparatus; desalination of water PACTIDE CORP 29 June 1970 [3 July 1969] 31405/70 Heading BIB A housing 14, formed by two sections 38 and 40 (Fig. 5), encloses a multiple-effect still 12 comprising two sets of stacked vapourpermeable membranes 16 alternating with vapour-impermeable corrugated films 18 which, together with the housing, sealing elements 24, 26, 28, 30, 62 (Fig. 3), and corrugated sheet 32, form flow channels 20, 22, 34. 66. The housing also contains four peripheral chambers 52, 54 (Fig. 4, not shown), 56, 58. A temperature-gradient is established across the still by passing hot liquid, preferably hot distilland, through channels 34 and passing cold liquid through the upper and lower channels 60. Coolant is supplied through tube 104 to chamber 56, flows through channels 60 to chamber 58, and leaves the housing through tube 106 (Fig. 1). Hot distilland, e.g. saline water, is supplied through tube 100 to chamber 52 whence it flows through channels 34 and 20 to chamber 54 and is withdrawn through tube 102 and tubes 108. As the distilland flows through the channels, vapour is evolved and diffuses through membranes 16, then condenses in channels 22 giving up heat which passes through the adjacent film 18 into the distilland flowing through the channel 20 of the next stage. Distillate is collected in conduits 92 and is removed through tubes 110. The housing and the sheet 32 may be made of polycarbonate. One side of each membrane 16 has parallel depressions which are at right angles to the parallel corrugations of films 18; this arrangement is claimed in Specification 129099. The method of making the apparatus is claimed in Specification 1296100.
