Abstract

1296100 Distillation apparatus; desalination of water PACTIDE CORP 29 June 1970 [3 July 1969] 7467/72 Divided out of 1296098 Heading BIB A distillation apparatus, such as the multiple-effect apparatus disclosed in Specification 1296098, wherein distilland flows through channels formed between sheet-like vapourpermeable membranes and. corrugated, heatconductive barrier films, arranged alternately in the form of a stack, and vapour diffuses through each membrane and condenses on the opposite side, is made by placing preformed sealing elements of plastic bonding material between each pair of membranes and barrier films, at the edges of the stack, and subjecting the. stack to heat and pressure to bond each of the sealing elements to its adjacent membrane and barrier film. A series of aligned holes are made through the stack in the region of the sealing elements, the holes forming conduits which pass through some sealing elements and are thus blocked from the channels between some pairs of membranes and barrier films but which communicate with other pairs. The distillation unit is enclosed within a housing comprising two complementary rectangular sections, made of polymeric material, each formed with a flange by means of which they are secured together, e.g. by use of adhesive or by welding. The housing contains four chambers for feeding and withdrawing liquids from the channels of the distillation, unit.
