Abstract
1,037,889. Polymerization, apparatus for; film-type evaporators. E.I.DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Sept. 1, 1964 [Sept. 9,1963], No. 35759/64. Headings B1B and B1X. Apparatus for carrying out polymerization reactions or for evaporating solutions comprises a horizontally disposed cyclindrical vessel 8 containing a rotatable agitator 9 in the form of a cylindrical cage. The agitator comprises two spoked end wheels 20 and 21 supported on rotatable shafts 18 and 19 and joined by horizontal peripheral bars 23, rods 22 connecting the bars and arranged in a generally helical formation so forming the cylindrical surface of the cage, and wires 30 and 31 lying within the cage in planes perpendicular to the horizontal axis of the vessel. A heating jacket 25 surrounds the vessel. Liquid enters through inlet 12, and is heated and flows through the vessel to the outlet 13, by the action of the rotating bars 22 which carry the liquid up and together with the wires cause the formation of the liquid film in the vessel. The vapour formed flows out through vent 15. A blade 24 at the outlet end wipes the end wall but allows the vapours to flow to the outlet 15. The apparatus may be used for the production of polyethylene terephthalate by heating bis-2-hydroxyethyl terephthalate with evolution of ethylene glycol until the desired viscosity is achieved. The preparation of polyhexamethylene adipamide from a low molecular weight condensate of hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid is also referred to.
