Abstract

The tyres (5) are laid on a plate or similar (4) in parallel rows. Each tyre overlaps the next like roofing tiles and each layer slopes the opposite way to the layer below. Odd and even numbers of tyres alternate in each layer. Vertical pressure (P) is applied to compress the stack through an upper plate (7). The plates (4), (7) can be replaced with a strong flexible sheet whose free edges are welded together. The tiles may be compressed on a pallet which has upwardly extending sides to contain the pile of tyres. Once the pile has been compressed a cover is placed over the sides of the pallet.
