1457472 Packaging pneumatic vehicle tyres CONTINENTAL GUMMI-WERKE AG 3 Sept 1974 [8 Sept 1973] 38347/74 Heading B8C In a packing of a plurality of pneumatic vehicle tyres 5 in the form of several layers of tyres partly overlapping one another in a roofing tile manner the tyres are compacted to a fixed end state, with the direction of overlap alternating between the layers, and are secured against resilient recoil. In a method of packing a plurality of pneumatic vehicle tyres 5, also according to the invention, the tyres, partly overlapping one another in the manner of roofing tiles, are stacked one upon the other in several layers with the direction of overlap alternating between adjacent layers, the stacked tyres are subjected to a compressive force acting predominantly in a direction normal to the plane of the layers, and, upon reaching a compacted end state, are secured against resilient recoil, the force being subsequently removed. As shown, a large number, e.g. fifty or more, tyres 5 are stacked, in two adjacent rows in layers, as described above, upon a temporary stacking plate 4 the tyres at the ends of the stack being placed upright to support the stack end faces. The stack is compressed in the direction P by a plate 7 until the terminal state of the compression required is reached whereupon the stack is enveloped in a tensile sheet 6 made endless by a weld seam 16. The sheet 6 made, e.g. of heat-shrinkable thermoplastics, may be replaced by tension-resistant material such as fabric, or net, and provided with reinforcing liners. One, or more, tension-resistant strips, cords, or the like, may be looped around the compressed tyres. The packing may include a palette, stacking plate, or a semi-rigid cardboard panel. Tyres of different external dimensions can be used in non-adjacent layers, or rows. A container may receive the packing.
