Abstract

1286197 Mattresses R J P EVANS 10 Dec 1970 [13 March 1970] 12082/70 Heading A4M [Also in Divisions B4-5] A mattress for preventing bedsores comprises two interdigitated series of parallel cells 1a, 1b each joined to respective header tubes 2 connected to a rotary valve 3 connected to an exhaust 5 and a pump 4 whereby alternate inflation of the two series may be effected, each cell 1a, 1b being formed from flexible sheet material, e.g. rubber-coated canvas or plastics material, and having a cross-section which flares outwardly towards its ends. Each cell 1a, 1b may, as shown, flare continuously from its mid-length or may include a central portion with uniform cross-section. Each cell may be formed in a mould by peripherally heat sealing two superposed sheets. The cells 1a, 1b are disposed in pockets 6 defined between a sheet 7 and a base sheet 8 to which the sheet 7 is secured. A loose cover 9 is secured by press studs 10 to the base sheet. Alternatively Fig.6, 7 (not shown), the cells (26) are detachably fastened at their ends (27) to a base sheet (25) and are engaged in pockets defined between retainer strips (28) and the base sheet (25). The cells are connected by T-junctions to header tubes (32, 33) disposed side-by-side.
