Abstract

959,103. Mattresses &c. TALLEY SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS Ltd. May 5, 1961, No. 16370/61. Heading A4M. A mattress or cushion for preventing bed sores or discomfort by automatically changing the area of body under pressure comprises a rubber sheet base 1 on which is secured by adhesive at spaced lines 1a a thinner rubber sheet 2 forming cells 3, each air-tight with respect to its neighbours and each having a porous filling such as sponge rubber to support the user. Suction is appplied at intervals to alternate cells so that the user is left supported on the non-evacuated cells. In a modification cells are formed in a material which is self-supporting under the weight of the user so that the suction causes collapse of material adjacent the cells. In another modification the resilient pad is replaced by a row of tubes with resiliently compressible walls. In a further modification Fig. 7 a series of elongated sponge rubber blocks 17 are spaced on a base sheet 18 with similar blocks 19 at the ends. A strip 20 of rubber of width the same as the height of the blocks surrounds the assembly and another strip 21 defines passages c, c, d, d respectively opening into header passages e, f, the whole being covered by a rubber sheet 22.
