Abstract

Process comprises (a) charging a converter to an average depth >1/3 the average dia. in the region of the melt, (b) injecting the oxidant gas through >=1 tuyere disposed in one half of the converter, i.e. to one side of a vertical plane passing through the converter axis, (c) injecting the gas through the tuyere(s) at a depth corresp. to >=1/3 the average dia. of the vessel, (d) injecting the oxidant gas through >=1 tuyere which forms an angle w.r.t. the central axis of the converter, and (e) injecting the gas into the melt at a flow rate of 0.5-5, pref. 0.5-3 m3 normal gas per tonne of molten mass per minute.
