Abstract

Oxygen-refined alloy steel is produced by refining a Cr-contg. iron charge in a metallurgical vessel by top blowing with pure oxygen and simultaneously introducing through the bottom of the vessel or into the melt at the bottom, a fluid so as to agitate the melt. The charge may consist of chrome iron or a mixt. of pig iron and ferrochrome, and agitation of the melt is effected by using as fluid Ar, N, steam, air, H, methane, propane, CO, CO2 or a fuel oil opt. together with O. Process reduces the wear of the lining and shortens the refining period.
