Abstract

Metallic and non-metallic substrates are provided with a Ni or Ni alloy electrodeposit which is then hardened by a boriding treatment using a gaseous mixt. of H2 and B halide pref. 100 mlH2 and 5-20 ml BCl3 or BBr3/per min. Pref. the Ni electrodeposit, or Ni alloy electrodeposit which may be a Ni-Co, Ni-Cr or Ni-Cr-Fe alloy has a thickness of 50-200 mu and is borided to a depth of 3-30 mu. The boriding treamtnet may be carried out for a time sufficient for borides to form in the Ni-deposit and the upper layer of the substrate.
