Abstract

Composite blocks have a complex interlayer, comprising a fine mesh woven glass fabric in contact with a rigid supporting layer or core (plywood, fibreboard or expanded polyurethane), a layer of felt and a layer of non-woven long fibre matting of synthetic material in contact with the underside of an abrasion resistant (polyethylene), low friction skin, impregnated with a heat cured binder resin. The blocks are two faced, i.e., an interlayer and skin on both major faces of the support panel, the underside of the polyethylene being heavily scored and then flamed or otherwise flash fused to generate a cellular or pocketed face offering a good key to the (epoxy) binder resin during hot press lamination to produce composite blocks or tiles. Combination of the interlayer and the treatment of the underface of the polyethylene provides a resilient and secure bond between the polyethylene skin and the wood based support, resistant to peeling or blistering due to temp. variations, moisture or shear. Pref. the interlayer is ca. 4mm. thick overall, and the core is a 5-ply crossply plywood. Block is used for building, e.g., artificial skating rinks and slide conveyors etc.
