Abstract

Slabs for assembly to form athletics tracks comprise a base of elastic material susceptible to about 2 mm compression under a pressure of 500 g/cm2 and supporting layers of adhesive bonded and impregnated fabrics which attenuate local superficial stresses ofup to 2500 g/cm3 down to 500 g/cm2 at the surface of the base layer. The slabs are covered with a wear resistant semi-rigid material. Pref. the base is of polyethylene or polypropylene foam 5-12, pref. 8 mm thick, covered with 4 layers of non-woven glass or polyester matting, pref. about 2 mm thick each, so that the overall slab thickness is 25-30 mm. Slabs 0.6-1.2 m wide and 2-2.5 m long are linked by overlapping flaps faced with grappling fabric or supported by prefabricated (plastic) channel profiles with intermediate longitudinal ribs to support the surface material.
