Abstract

1442806 Water-pervious coated needled laminates J P STEVENS & CO Inc 23 June 1973 24721/73 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions A5-A6] A liquid water-pervious carpet for surfacing indoor and outdoor athletic surfaces comprises at least one batt of fibres of length 1¢-6 inches needled through a liquid-water-pervious, non-water-absorbent membrane, e.g. a woven or non-woven polypropylene scrim, to form a non-crimped pile layer on the face of the batt from which needling takes place, at least the pile having applied thereto a binder which coats the individual fibres but does not form a continuous layer. Either a second fibrous carpet layer may be needled, or a reinforcing cellular polyvinyl chloride backing may be applied, to the other face of the membrane. An elastomeric rubber, polyurethane or polyvinyl chloride backing may be applied. The carpet may be affixed to a series of wood, hardboard or polyurethane foam panels which can lock together to form a portable tennis court, or plastics backing layers may be provided with a regular waffle pattern to facilitate adhesion to a surface by suction. Fibrous batts are preferably applied to the membrane with their fibres lying across the machine direction. If two fibrous layers are used, the bottom layer may be of polypropylene and may be embossed by heated rollers to form parallel drainage grooves or channels after the carpet has been made; the top layer may be thicker and may be of lightresistant fibres, e.g. acrylic, although other fibres are specified including acrylic-polypropylene mixtures. If only one fibrous layer is used, it may be a thick polypropylene or acrylic batt. The binder may be applied to the face or to the face and back, of the needled structure by kiss-coating, spraying or saturation, followed by application of pressure to ensure penetration of at least the pile layer. Specified binders, which approximate to the rebound characteristics of a clay tennis court, are crosslinking ethylene-vinyl acetate and ethyl acrylate-acrylonitrile dispersions and polyurethane.
