Abstract

1389952 Laminates RHONE-POULENC SA 22 Dec 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 59520/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division B6] An assembly comprises mosiac tiles glued by their back faces to a flexible support which comprises at least one spun-bonded web of randomly distributed continuous synthetic filaments, the thickness of the web being 1-3 mm. and the weight of the web being 50-30 g. per m. The support may be spun-bonded filaments of polyethylene glycol terephthalate, isotactic polypropylene, polyamide, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyacrylonitrile or cellulose acetate. The support may consist of a single spun-bonded web or a plurality of such webs secured together by needle punching. The adhesive may be a synthetic polymer solution or dispersion, e.g. the copolymer of vinyl acetate and dibutyl maleate or a vinyl acetate homopolymer. Many examples of suitable adhesives are given. The assembly may be produced by placing the tiles on a planar surface optionally using a grid to achieve uniform spacing, applying adhesive to the back face of the tiles or alternatively impregnating the spun-bonded web with adhesive, and then applying the spun-bonded web. The assembly can be attached to a rigid support by gluing and can be used for covering and/or decorating floors, walls and ceilings, covering shelves, work surfaces, coat-stands, pillars and flower vases. The assembly may be combined with a plywood sheet, chipboard or asbestos-cement sheet, metal plates, or a laminated structure made by superposing layers of a thermosetting resin such as an unsaturated polyester and of a reinforcement such as a glass fabric or non-woven web. Heat or sound insulation boards may be produced by placing two panels of mosaic tiles, or only one and a supporting panel or a panel of plywood on to which a non-woven web is glued parallel to one another and 1-10 cm. apart, and filling the space between them with polyurethane foam. In an example two panels consisting of stonewear tiles glued on to a non- woven web are clipped on to the inside walls of a vertical frame, the non-woven parts of the panels facing one another and a mixture consisting of polyester resin and a diisocyanate is poured into the inside. The product comprised two mosaic panels bonded to two faces of a cellular polyurethane plate.
