Abstract

Foamed surface coverings are produced by impregnating throughout a large part of their thickness, definitely selected zones of a non-woven ground fabric, with >=1 mixt. of expandable resin, and then causing the resin mixt(s). to foam. The ground fabric is of glass fibres 'laid down wet', weighing between 35-70 g/m2, and bonded with a suitable thermo-setting resin. Some zones of the ground fabric are impregnated with a first mixt. of expandable resin, whilst some of the others are selectively impregnated with one or more resin mixts. the foaming characteristics of which are different from those of the first mixt. These zones outstanding, are impregnated with a non-foaming resin which is applied to the reverse face of the fabric from that on which the foamable mixt. is deposited, poss. after bonding to a film, so as to provide a reinforcement for the ground fabric. A quite thin floor covering can be produced which has the qualities normally associated with thicker and more expensive materials. Equilibrium of the surfaces prevents curling at the edges.
