Cpds. of formula (I): (where R is H, lower alkyl, Cl or Br; R1 and R2 are H, halogen, opt. substd. lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio, lower alkyl, CF3, an opt. substd. sulphonamide gp., dialkylamino or acylamino; R5 is lower alkyl opt. substd. by phenyl; R3 is H or lower alkyl and R is lower alkyl, or NR3R4 is a 3- to 7-membered heterocycle opt. contg. other heteroatoms; n is 1-4; X is H or forms a bond with Y; Y is H or forms =O with Z or forms a bond with X; Z is H, lower alkyl, OH or forms =O with Y), and their acid addn. salts, are useful as antidepressants. (I; X=H, Y+Z=O) are pref. prepd. by reacting a cpd. (II): with Hal-CH2(CH2)nNR3R4 in the presence of a base, and can be converted to other cpds. (I) by standard methods.
