Abstract

A double-pipe heat exchanger of compact, flat light construction. Condensate is introduced tangentially into the outer annulus and is maintained in helical flow by a continuous fin occupying the whole space between inner and outer tubes, except that where necessary, to allow flow of liquid phase separately, fin may be enclosed eccentrically leaving space at bottom. The fin provides support for tube walls, so that the system may readily be formed, e.g. into a hairpin with outer tube only being bent to a drooping lower leg as condensate collector. Cooling liquid then flows countercurrently straight into hairpin inner tube at bottom and is constrained into opposing helical flow by a twisted band, passing out at top.
