Abstract

The mould has a channel in the bottom which acts as an intermediate tundish and receive molten metal from the electrodes. The metal is refined by the slag in this channel before finding its way through four equally spaced connecting channels into the central hole of the mould where it forms a pool for solidification and withdrawal through the bottom. It is possible to have a shallow metal bath in the channel and to produce blocks of large dia. up to 3,000 mm, with homogeneous structure and chemical compsn.
