Abstract

Glass fibre-reinforced rubber is made by (1) depositing on glass fibres an organo-Si compound in which the organic group contains an NH2 group, (2) coating the treated fibres with a S-curable elastomer containing 0.05% of ZnO and 0.5% of free fatty acid, up to 5% of S and up to 5% of a vulcanisation accelerator, and (3) applying a curable rubber to the fibres and curing the resulting composite. The S-curable elastomer can be a natural, SBR, nitrile, butyl or halogenated butyl rubber, neoprene, a polydiene or a C2H4/C3H6 terpolymer. The use of elastomers containing no more than small amounts of ZnO and fatty acids improves the bonding of the elastomer to the glass fibres through the aminosilane.
