Abstract

In a moulded rubber oil seal reinforced by a metal insert incorporated in the moulding of the seal, the metal insert is provided with a protective coating of synthetic resin applied by coating the insert with a liquid preparation of the synthetic resin which is caused to harden and set prior to the coated insert being incorporated in the moulding. Thermosetting resins, such as phenol-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde and alkyd resins, or cold-setting resins, such as phenol-formaldehyde or other phenolic resin hardened and made infusible by the addition of a catalyst or hardening agent, may be used. The resin may be applied only to that part of the metal insert which is not covered by the rubber in the moulding. To improve its adhesion to the rubber, the resin coating may be slightly roughened or given a coating of special adhesive, such as chlorinated rubber cement.
