Abstract

1350577 Bonding polyethylene DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 10 May 1971 [15 May 1970] 23664/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] A process for bonding a surface of polyethylene, to a substrate includes the steps of pretreating the surface of the material by immersion in chlorosulphonic acid, washing to remove the chlorosulphonic acid, drying and applying adhesive. The surface is preferably roughened, e.g. with abrasive paper, prior to the immersion. The chlorosulphonic acid is suitably at a temperature below 40‹ C. and immersion is suitably of 45 minutes duration. In the examples, polyethylene is bonded to (1) polyethylene using an epoxy adhesive; (2) and (3) aluminium using an epoxy adhesive; (4) aluminium using a neoprene adhesive or sponge rubber using a neoprene adhesive or (5) to aluminium using a butadiene/acrylonitrile/neoprene adhesive or a cured neoprene adhesive.
