Abstract

The surfaces of articles in polyesters derived from aromatic dicarboxylic acids (with possibly small amounts of aliphatic acids) and aliphatic and or cycloaliphatic diols can be etched by treatment with aqueous solutions of metal hydroxides at temperatures of up to 120 deg.C for times of up to 1 hour. The degree of etching can be controlled by adjusting the concentrations of the alkali and the treatment conditions. Matt surfaces showing improved adhesion properties are produced. Use of LiOH, NaOH, or KOH solutions. The solution concentration is such that the density of the solution is only slightly lower than that of the article.
