Abstract
A two-stage process for the preparation of terephthalic acid from dialkali metal terephthalate comprises (1) treating the latter with a monoalkali metal phthalate in a reaction medium comprising a preformed aqueous solution of a dialkali metal phthalate or with benzoic acid in a reaction medium comprising a preformed aqueous solution of alkali benzoate, and isolating the precipitated monoalkali terephthalate, and (2) treating the latter with phthalic acid or anhydride in a reaction medium comprising a preformed aqueous solution of monoalkali phthalate, or with benzoic acid in a reaction medium comprising a preformed aqueous solution of alkali benzoate and isolating the precipitated terephthalic acid.
