Abstract

[Also in Groups XVI and XXIV] A toggle-actuated platen cutting-out press has two operating speeds and means allowing it to pass automatically from one to the other speed in the course of each working cycle so that the slow speed is engaged during at least a part of the impression dwell of each cycle and the fast speed outside that period. The press has a fixed upper platen 2 and a vertically movable lower platen 4 actuated by toggle levers 5. The toggle levers are connected to eccentric portions of a main shaft 7 by connecting rods 6. The shaft 7 is driven through a worm and pinion arrangement 10, 11 from a shaft 9, a fly wheel 8 connected to the shaft 9 being driven by a motor (not shown). One rotation of the shaft 7 effects a complete cycle of the press. The flywheel 8 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 9 and has integral therewith a clutch plate 17 and a gear 16. The plate 17 can be clutched electromagnetically by means of a coil 24 to a clutch plate 18 keyed to the shaft 9. The gear 16 meshes with a gear 19 integral with a gear 20. The gear 20 meshes with a gear 21 freely rotatable on the shaft 9 and connected to a clutch plate 22 which can be electromagnetically clutched by means of a coil 25 to a clutch plate 23 keyed to the shaft 9. The number of teeth on the gears 16, 19, 20, 21 is such that the ratio of the speeds of the gears 16 and 21 is four to one. Thus if the flywheel 8 is driven at 2400 revolutions per hour and the clutch 17, 18 is engaged, but not the clutch 22, 23, the press will operate at a speed of 2400 cycles per hour. If the conditions of the clutches are reversed the press will operate at 600 cycles per hour. Cams on the main shaft 7 operate an electric control system for the clutches 17, 18 and 22, 23 in such a way that during the period when the platens are actually making an impression the press runs at 600 c.p.h. while at all other times it runs at 2400 c.p.h. The press may be run continuously at 2400 c.p.h.
