Abstract
787,761. Toggle presses. GOLDING, W. F. July 2, 1956 [June 30, 1955], No. 18989/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXIV] A crank mechanism for a toggle-actuated press comprises four gears 15 secured to a driving shaft 11, each gear 15 meshing a gear 16 having at least one hub 17 supported in a journal-type bearing 18 and a single crank pin in the form of a rod 19 extending through all four gears 16. The arrangement is such that when the mechanism is under load, the crank formed by the rod 19 and gears 16 is not subjected to torque. The shaft 11 is driven from an electric motor 12 through belt reduction gearing 13, and a worm gear 14. Connecting rods 20 on the crank 19 are mounted on pivot pins 9 joining the upper and lower arms 7, 8 of a toggle 5 between a fixed base 4 and a vertically movable platen 3. A toothed sector 21 on the toggle arm 8 meshes a correspondingly toothed sector 22 on the lower arm of another toggle 6, thereby constrained to move simultaneously with the toggle 5. Reciprocation of the connecting rod 20 thus raises and lowers the platen 3 of the press with respect to an upper fixed platen 1.
