Abstract

811,464. Mechanical presses. MINSTER MACHINE CO. May 16, 1956, No. 15284/56. Class 87(2). A mechanical press has an electrical motor driving successively a flywheel shaft, an intermediate shaft having a clutch and brake unit, and a crankshaft. The press has a base 10, sides 12, 14 and a crown 16 containing the driving mechanism for a vertically reciprocable upper platen 18 guided in adjustable gibs 20, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), on the sides 12, 14. The driving mechanism comprises an adjustably mounted motor 22 with a pulley 24 and belts 26 driving a pulley 28 on a shaft 30 having a flywheel 39 and a pinion 34 meshing with a gearwheel 36 freely mounted on an intermediate shaft 38. The shaft 30 is mounted in eccentrically bored blocks 31, Fig. 11 (not shown), enabling either of two different sized gearwheels 36 to be used. The intermediate shaft 38 has at each end a pinion 44, meshing with a gearwheel 46 on each end of a crankshaft 48 having connecting rods 50 driving the platen 18, and a clutch-brake unit 40 pneumatically operated to transmit the motion of the gearwheel 36 to the shaft 38 and hence to the platen 18, but normally braked so that this motion is not transmitted. The pneumatic pressure operating the clutch may be controlled to allow the clutch to slip under a pre-determined load. The location of the clutch on the intermediate shaft instead of a higher speed shaft is said to ensure longer clutch life owing to the lesser static inertia to be overcome on operating the press. Two further embodiments are described in one of which, Fig. 13 (not shown), the crank shaft is driven at one end only by pinion 44 and gearwheel 46, and in the other, Fig. 14 (not shown), the crankshaft is driven by a centrally placed gearwheel 46 and pinion 44. Specification 769,359 is referred to.
