Abstract
808,006. Riveting. JACKSON Ltd., A. N., and JACKSON, A. N. Aug. 19, 1957 [Aug. 17, 1956], No. 25162/56. Class 83 (4). A riveting machine of the squeeze type in which the riveting head is given a riveting stroke at each operation of the machine from a continuously driven motor is characterized in that the motor drives a worm-gear and clutch, one member of which is mounted on a hollow shaft driven by the worm-wheel and the second member of which is carried on a concentric central shaft passing through the hollow shaft, the central shaft being rotated through the clutch on withdrawal of a cam plunger, to actuate a cross-head operating the riveting head through toggle mechanism, the clutch members being engaged by a spring on withdrawal of the cam plunger. The machine has a gap frame C and a head C<SP>1</SP> carrying a ram T2 operated by an electric motor A mounted on a base plate B attached to the frame C. The motor drives through a flywheel and slipping coupling B<SP>1</SP> a worm-shaft D in a gear-box E. The worm-wheel F is mounted on a hollow shaft G to which is keyed one member H of the clutch. A shaft G<SP>1</SP>, within the shaft G, carries the other clutch member H<SP>1</SP> and also two clutchdisengaging cams J which are controlled by a plunger mechanism J<SP>1</SP>. The ram T<SP>2</SP> is operated by toggle mechanism T, T<SP>1</SP> connected to a crosshead P, N, the arms M, M<SP>1</SP> of which engage trunnions K, K<SP>1</SP> on the clutch member H<SP>1</SP> and cam boss J respectively. When the machine is running with the clutch disengaged only the hollow shaft G and the clutch member H are revolving. By depressing a lever Q the plunger J<SP>1</SP> is raised and the spring R brings the clutch members H, H<SP>1</SP> into engagement so that the inner shaft G<SP>1</SP>, the cams J and the trunnions make a complete revolution to effect the riveting stroke. The lever Q is raised after the riveting operation and the plunger descends into the path of the cams J to release the clutch.
