Process for the preparation of 1,8-naphthyridine derivatives and, more particularly, for the preparation of compounds of formula I **(See formula)** and tautomers and acid addition salts thereof, in which R1 and R2 are the same or different and signify hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, aralkyloxy, amino, acylamino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic monocyclic group, which is attached to the diazanaphthalene group through its nitrogen, acyl, alkoxycarbonylalkyl, alkoxycarbonyl or other carboxylic acid derived group; R3 signifies alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, hydroxyl, alkoxy, amino, acylamino or halogen; R4 signifies hydrogen or an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, halogen, nitro, alkoxy, hydroxy, amino, acylamino or carboxylic acid derivative group; characterized in that it comprises subjecting a compound of formula II **(See formula)** in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 are as indicated above, to isomerization and eventually converting the compound of formula I thus obtained to its tautomer into an acid addition salt.
