Abstract
A method of producing an intertwined yarn of predetermined opening length, i.e. distance between points of intertwining, comprises passing a yarn through a jet of medium directed substantially perpendicularly to the yarn and thereafter flowing freely away, and subjecting the yarn to fluctuations in tension. The frequency of the fluctuations is given by n=w/l where n= the number of cycles of fluctuations in tension per minute, w= the rate of travel of the yarn in metres per minute and /= the required average opening length in metres. In a preferred embodiment, the yarn 4 .is passed to the nozzle 9, supplying the jet of medium, via two guides 5 and 6. The fluctuations in tension are produced by means of a pin 8 mounted on a rotating disc 7. Alternative means for producing the fluctuations in the yarn tension comprise an electromagnetic yarn brake, or a vibrator of adjustable frequency. The initial pressure of the air used as the jet medium is 2.5 to 5 atmospheres, preferably 3.2 to 4.2 atmospheres. The yarn tension fluctuates between a lower value of 0.02 to 0.18 lbs./ denier and an upper value of 0.4 to 0.8 lbs/ denier. The lower value of yarn tension is preferably in the range 0.04 to 0.15 Ibs./denier and the upper value is preferably in the range 0.45 to 0.63 Ibs./denier. The average frequency of the fluctuations in yarn tension is from 2000 to 10,000 per minute, preferably 5000 to 8500 per minute. Air or steam may be used as the jet medium.
