Abstract
1,112,578. Spreading tow tensioning. COURTAULDS Ltd. 3 Sept., 1965 [4 Sept., 19641, No. 36267/64. Headings D1D, D1F and D1N. A textile tow 2 eg. of crimped continuous filaments is opened by being passed adjacent a series of air jets which are oscillated laterally of the sliver with a amplitude at least as great as the maximum spacing of. adjacent jets. The tow is drawn along an open topped channel 1 beneath the jets which are formed in a tube 4 to which air is supplied. The closed end of tube 4 is connected to a cam-driven or electromagnetic vibrator 7 to oscillate the jets. The jets may be directed at right angles to the tow or in or against the direction of movement thereof to produce a decrease or increase in the tension thereof. Alternatively the jets may incline outwardly, the inclination of the jets increasing from the centre of the tow outwards. Adjacent jets may be differently inclined. The series of jets may be staggered or inclined to the direction of travel of the tow and the direction of oscillation may be inclined to the direction of travel. Two or more tubes 4 each having different characteristics may be used. An example is given with numerical data.
