Abstract

Sheets which are to be printed on both sides are fed from board 16 on to first impression cylinder 12 and are printed on one side, then are turned end for end by transfer cylinder 10 and fed by it to second impression cylinder 14, where their printed sides lie inwards and their other sides are printed on in turn. Both printing operations may be by rotary offset lithography. The transfer cylinder 10 engages the trailing edge of each sheet with suction means before it is released from first impression cylinder 12, and holds it successively with two sets of grippers as it is turned. Each set of grippers comprises a shaft which is rotatable, but is fixed relative to the cylinder 10, and carries with it in its rotation between stops a pad and a movable shaft bearing gripper fingers. When the trailing edge of sheet S 1 is engaged by suction means 58 it is stretched by movement of the suction means about shaft 66, so that any wrinkles W 1 are straightened out, then when it is released from first impression cylinder 12 its leading edge is grasped by gripper fingers 92 and pad 90, and as shaft 82 rotates the sheet edge is carried into the interior of cylinder 10. There it is transferred to gripper fingers 102 and pad surface 106, and with rotation of shaft 96 is returned to the surface of cylinder 96, from where it is transferred to second impression cylinders 14 as the leading edge of the sheet.
