Abstract
In a compressed air brake in which a valve 58 vents an auxiliary cylinder A to allow a spring 44 to automatically apply the brake when pressure in actuator B is lost, air to fill the space C behind the auxiliary piston 28 is supplied by internal breathing from the actuator space B so that dirt is not drawn in from outside. The actuator consists of a diaphragm 20 acting on an operating rod 22 biased into the brakereleasing position, Fig. 1. Air-pressure at 42 forces it down to effect braking. When the diaphragm 20 rises due to loss of air-pressure, it lifts valve 58 in a hollow push-rod 34, Fig. 8. Pressure is normally supplied to chamber A at 40 to hold piston 28 up, but if it is cut off manually or by failure, valve 58 is opened as the brake is applied. Air then flows from chamber B, over the disc 34, through aperture 56, the valve 58, the duct 54 into chamber C. This chamber is vented outwardly only by valves 53A, so that dirt cannot enter.
