Abstract

A ships bow construction for both ice breaking and sea going service comprises a stem and a bulbous bow 29 extending horizontally forward below the load water line WL and being symmetrical about the main vertical centreplane of the ship, the bulbous bow having transverse cross-sections of which the width W is greater than the height H. The bulbuos bow may have a substantially diamond crosssection, and be surmounted with a relatively sharp edged blade 36 to help in breaking ice.
