Abstract

1,215,529. Ice-breaking. ALEXBOW CANADA Ltd. 15 Aug., 1968 [15 Aug., 1967], No. 39020/68. Heading B7A. A low structure 10 for ice-breaking comprises two relatively inclined surfaces 21 for deflecting ice and a vertical blade 23 for splitting it. In Fig. 2, surfaces 21 have portions facing upwardly and forwardly and upper curved portions 22. The surfaces 21 intersect in a vertical plane, blade 23 extending upwardly from the line of intersection. The blade has tapered ends and is of uniform height in the region of the water level. A bottom plate (20, Fig. 3, not shown) joins the bottom edges of the surfaces 21. A hollow portion 11 contains tanks for ballast and has a slot (12) to receive a bow of a vessel which will push the structure 10 ahead of it. Alternatively a bow of a vessel is formed with the deflecting surfaces and blade.
