Abstract

The reactor concrete pressure vessel 1 has a metal lining 2 which is covered by a layer of non- metallic fibrous insulating material, 4, secured by the studs 3 and metal sheets 6. The material 4 is compressed by the metal coverplates, 7, engaged by the nuts 8 and washers 9. The latter make line contact with 7 to reduce heat losses, and thermal convection within the fibrous layers is prevented by the metal strip seals 12. Gaps between adjacent coverplates 7 serve as vents to permit rapid gas pressure changes without damage. Metal gauze filters are fitted at the gaps. An alternative form of seal 12 is formed by corrugations in the sheets 6, of sufficient depth to engage the adjacent sheets. The seals may extend through one or more layers of the insulating material. Distance pieces 5 may be provided between successive layers of insulating material or shoulders may be mounted on the studs 3.
