Abstract

1,158,026. Reactor shields. WHESSOE Ltd. 28 June, 1968 [30 March, 1967], No. 14657/67. Heading G6C. The internal steel liner of a nuclear reactor vessel wall is thermally insulated by successive layers of insulating material, secured to the liner, under steel coverplates by studs welded to the liner. The liner 4 is insulated by the layers 6 and 10 of mineral fibre and the units 7 and 11. The joints 9 are filled with mineral fibre and the assembly is secured to 4 by the plates 12 which are engaged by studs and nuts 3, 14. The washers 13 are shaped to present a minimum contact area. Gas circulation is prevented by the fins 17 and barriers 18. The units 7 and 11 may be either containers filled with insulating material or uncased slabs of insulating material. When containers are used they may be of sheet steel or woven material such as asbestos or steel wire. A steel wire mesh, 5, welded to 4, causes lines of compression in the fibre layer 6 which reduces convection circulation.
