Abstract

1361309 Cryogenic cable tube COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE and L'AIR LIQUIDE SOC ANON POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES GEORGES CLAUDE 3 March 1972 [4 March 1971] 10191/72 Headings H1A and A4D A cryogenic cable tube comprises a fluid-tight cylindrical metallic internal enclosure 10 which carries a cryogenic fluid and a plurality of electric conductors 50, a thermal screen 20 surrounding the internal enclosure and spaced therefrom, cooling ducts 110, 130 fastened to said screen, a fluidtight cylindrical metallic external enclosure 30 surrounding the screen and spaced therefrom, a suspension system 60, 280, 70, 100 and 90 for the internal enclosure and for the screen in the external enclosure, at least one perforated pipe 260 for creating a vacuum between the internal and external enclosures, a thermal insulating material 240 between the screen and the external enclosure, return ducts 220 for the cooling fluid for the screen and return ducts 310 for the cooling fluid for the internal enclosure, and is characterized by the fact that the screen consists of a metal strip bent into the form of a cylinder, the two adjacent edges of said bent strip being partially turned over externally so as to surround each of the cooling ducts 110, 130. The internal and external enclosures may each consist of a strip bent to cylindrical form, the two edges being turned over in the form of engaging Us so as to engage with each other, the engaging edges being welded to form a fluid-tight seal. The fluid return ducts are preferably provided with thermally insulating spacer members 230, 320 at spaced intervals and a felt ribbon 250 can be coiled around the screen 20 to prevent insulation 240 penetrating into the screen. A method of assembling the cable on site is disclosed.
