Abstract
In the drying of wood, the wood stacked in batches is passed on cars which are moved intermittently on rails 4, through a drying channel 3 in which it is treated in one section with a countercurrent gas stream and then in a second section with a cocurrent gas stream the streams being produced by axial fans 9, 10. The fans 9, 10 are mounted in the side walls of the channel, are symmetrically mounted with respect to the central longitudinal vertical plane of the channel, have their shafts perpendicular to the said plane and blow air into the space 7 between the two sections of the drying channel. The gas streams are returned to the fans by passages 5, 6 which have heat exchangers 17, 18. During circulation of the gas streams some fresh gas is introduced through inlets 21 and a corresponding amount of gas is vented through outlets 22. Means are provided for controlling the heating of the gas streams and the ventilation of the gas.
