Abstract

A steel containing up to 0À08%C is characterized by a fine grained micro-structure comprising austenite or martensite in a ferrite matrix in which the transverse mean path between the austenite or martensite particles is so short (e.g. not above 8 microns) that when the steel is strained at 0À16-0À26 inch inch minute at 925-980 C. its tensile elongation is at least 150%. The steel may comprise Cr 18-35% Ni 2-12% C 0À08% max. Ti up to 1À5% # (a) up to 1À5% total V up to 1% # (b) Ti + V is at least Mn 0À1% 4 x (%C-0À03) Si 0-1% (c) For Cu 2% or more Mo 0-3% Mn does not exceed 0À3% Co 0-2% and Si does not exceed Cu 0-2À5% 0À4% (d) 1À17% (%Ni) + 13À3 # %Cr + %Mo # 3À5(%Ni) + 11 the balance, apart from up to 1% in total of Mg, Zr, Al, Ce, B and Hf and the lowest amounts possible of P, N, S, O and H, being iron. Steels as above containing 23-35% Cr and 4À5-12% Ni are said to be novel. The desired micro-structure is made by plastically deforming the steel (e. g. by 50%) in the two phase temperature region, the steel having a ferrite solid solution structure containing precipitable austenite, and heating the steel within the said region during or after the deformation to recrystallize the ferrite and precipitate the austenite. The alloys may be welded using a matching filler wire.
