Abstract

A catalyst system comprises (a) 1 part by weight of the solid reaction product, prepared at a temperature within the range of from - 20 DEG C. to + 25 DEG C., of TiCl4 with an aluminium compound that contains chlorine, (b) 0.1 to 1 part by weight of the solid reaction product prepared at a temperature within the range of from +30 DEG C. to + 100 DEG C., of TiCl4 with an alkylaluminium compound that contains chlorine, and (c) diethylaluminium monochloride. The catalyst system is used for making olefine polymers having a broad molecular weight distribution by polymerizing ethylene, or copolymerizing ethylene with up to 5% by weight of butene-(1) or propylene, in the presence of hydrogen, by "low pressure" techniques, in an inert diluent. The polymers besides a braod molecular have a U-value within the range of from 9 to 27, at a reduced specific viscosity of 2.7, determined in a 0.1% by weight solution in xylene at 110 DEG C.
