Abstract
Polymers of olefines of the formula CH2= CHR, where R is hydrogen or a C1 to C6 aliphatic radical are made by polymerizing one or more olefines in the presence of a catalyst obtained by (a) mixing TiCl4 in at least stoichiometric quantity with an organo-aluminium compound at a temperature between -30 DEG and +70 DEG C. in the absence of a dispersing agent, (b) heating the reaction mixture at a temperature between 100 DEG and 150 DEG C., (c) distilling off unreacted TiCl4 and (d) subsequently milling the reaction product and activating it with an organoaluminium compound. The product obtained from reactions (a) to (c) is generally a mixture of TiCl3 and AlCl3. The olefine may be ethylene, propylene, or butene-1. The organoaluminium compound may be AlR3, AlR2Cl, Al2R3Cl3 or AlRCl2, where R is a C1 to C6 alkyl radical, preferably ethyl. The polymerization is generally effected in a hydrocarbon diluent and the polymers recovered by conventional techniques, e.g. addition of n-butanol. The molecular weight of the polymer may be controlled with hydrogen. Specifications 810,023, 810,024 and 895,595 are referred to.ALSO:A mixture of TiCl3 and AlCl3 is obtained by reacting TiCl4 in an amount in excess of the stoichiometric quantity with an organo-aluminium compound at a temperature between - 30 DEG and + 70 DEG C., heating the resulting reaction mixture at a temperature between 100 DEG and 150 DEG C., and distilling off unreacted TiCl4. In examples, the above mixture is obtained using as the organo-aluminium compound triethyl aluminium, diethylaluminium monochloride, and ethylaluminium sesquichloride.
