Abstract

Ethylene and propylene are block copolymerized in a reactor, in the presence of a polymerization catalyst and at a temperature of between 10 and 90 DEG C.; a single charge of ethylene is employed and is added to the reactor when the partial propylene pressure therein is at least 0.5 atmospheres. Preferably the single charge of ethylene, constituting less than 15% of the total weight of propylene, is added after at least 80% of the total yield of solid polymer finally obtained as the product of polymerization has been formed. If desired more propylene may be added for a short period after ethylene addition has been stopped. The molecular weight of the block copolymers may be controlled by the addition of hydrogen in the propylene feed, in proportion of between 0.02 and 5% molar, in which case 5-15% of ethylene by weight of the total amount of propylene charged is used. Polymerization is carried out in an inert hydrocarbon diluent. Catalysts used are generally those of which one component is an organo-metallic compound and the other a compound of a transition metal from Group IV-VI of the Periodic Table. Specifications 877,050, 941,083 and 970,478 are referred to.
